FIREWEED AGAINST DISCRIMINATION
Discriminated and Vulnerable
Above: K. Kisin, 50 yrs of age and disabled for the last 15 years
Attention was brought to Fireweed of the the plight of several vulnerable women and children. All were suffering from discrimination and facing starvation without receiving any public funding from their local authority.
Some had been abandoned and were living alone whilst others were also caring for children. One person had been blind since birth and was living alone.
Fireweed contacted the local authorities and also a national football club and raised awareness of the misery of these women. We managed to arrange food aid for the women and by liaising with the local authorities achieved to get all women registered for assistance from the government. This had been previously unavailable to the women.
Road improvements
Fireweed heard of the the plight of nine villages in Turkey. The villages were connected with roads that were in such a bad state, that they had become unpassable.
The nearest hospital being 50 km away was impossible to be reached by women and children with the bad road conditions.
Fireweed liaised with the local authority via video link and achieved to get work to commence immediately and repairs were initiated. Fireweed has also managed to get a buget set aside to have all the connecting roads tarmacked in 2021.
All at Fireweed are so happy with the outcome that has brought about the end to the misery of so many people.
Clean Drinking Water Suppy
Due to the poor quality of drinking water suppied and piped to several villages in Turkey dozens of women and children were hopitalised and sadly one man of 42 years died from cholera.
The problem was brought about with the water supply being contaminated by sewerage.
Fireweed had discussions with the local authority and are now happy to see that the local authority has upgraded the water system to ensure it is clean and safe.
This was so essential for the health and well being of women and children in the area.
Images show the old and new buildings housing the water storage.
Caterpillar Infestation
An area to the east of Turkey is currently infested with toxic Caterpillars.
The toxic nature of these creatures causes severe rashes upon contact and is a particular threat to children.
In order to protect local people, livestock and crops Fireweed has contacted local authorities and the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry. We are working with residents who have started a campaign to bring this to the attention of the president's office in Ankara.
Fireweed would like to see the the government supply the natural predators of these caterpillars which is a species of beetle and also a bird called a Partridge to the area.
